Women in Property tour Redcliff Quarter

The South West branch of the Association of Women in Property have been given a guided tour of work in progress at Redcliff Quarter.

Redcliff Quarter, which is being developed by Change Real Estate in a joint venture with Cannon Family Office and ICG Longbow, is one of the city’s most exciting regeneration projects. The £180 million, 600,000 sq ft development will transform a derelict and little used area in the heart of Bristol into a vibrant centre that will make a positive contribution to the city. The mixed-use development will comprise residential, restaurants, hotel, offices and a European style food hall, and will provide much sought-after link between the Harbourside and new development around Temple Meads.

With the first phase of development well underway – comprising 128 residential units for private rent – the Women in Property group saw at first hand the 3.3 acre site, and heard from contractors Galliford Try about the project. Phase one is due for completion in July 2018. It is anticipated that preparation works on phase two, including archaeology, will start later this year.

The freehold of phase one has been sold to A2Dominion, who will market the units under their FABRICA brand for private rent.

When complete Redcliff Quarter will make a positive contribution to the local economy, creating around 4-500 jobs and an estimated £7million per annum.

Connectivity will be critical to delivering housing growth

Infrastructure and connectivity is going to have a huge impact on how the West of England delivers the new housing required to support economic development. A new report launched by Bristol property adviser GVA outlines how the electrification of the Great Western Mainline will be a key driver of economic growth, unlocking significant change and development.

GVA’s report, “Great Western Electrification: Unlocking future growth” launched at a breakfast event in Bristol entitled Evolving Bristol, takes an indepth look at the opportunities being opened up by infrastructure investment and the importance it will play in the continued evolution of Bristol and the South West region.

Jo Davis, Regional Senior Director at GVA talked about how infrastructure and connectivity is going to have a huge impact on how the city moves forward.

“The electrification of the Great Western Mainline will be a key driver of economic growth and the redevelopment of and around Bristol Temple Meads station will be a game-changer,” she told the audience. “It will unlock significant change and development at Enterprise Zones and commercial hubs around Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Chippenham. Yet this all needs to be considered in the context of housing growth forecasts for the region.  With the West of England considering a target to provide 85,000 new homes over the next Local Plan, connectivity and accessibility are critical to delivering housing that supports economic development in a sustainable way.”

Re-opened rural railway stations at places such as Saltford, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wilton and Corsham provide important opportunities to consider as locations for sustainable, long-term residential growth. Other locations that will be increasingly connected to the Great Western Mainline corridor through new stations or capacity improvements such as Portishead, Cirencester and Long Ashton would also support a mix of uses with new floorspace for businesses.

GVA welcomed two guest speakers to the Evolving Bristol event, Mr Barra Mac Ruairi, Strategic Director of Place at Bristol City Council, and Dr Jo Michell, senior lecturer economics at UWE.

Speaking about the wider economy and prospects for growth in Bristol, Mr Mac Ruairi said, “Bristol is well placed to maintain our economic momentum as we proceed towards Brexit. We are a resilient city and our productivity continues to outperform, in fact we have the highest employment rate of any UK Core City. However, we should not take these strengths for granted; as a city we need to address the issues that saw the UK vote to leave the EU. We need to ensure that our growth is inclusive and not exclusive. We need to collaborate to compete, and through devolution, and any other means, continue to press Government for the best possible support for our city region.”

Dr Jo Michell, Senior Lecturer Economics at UWE, supported this view, “Bristol is close to the top of the table when it comes to productivity compared to other city regions in the UK, and we’re above the UK average. However, alongside a dynamic, broad based economy, and strong educational levels second only to London, Bristol also has a wide poverty gap which cannot be ignored as we move forward in an uncertain, post-Brexit economy.”

Transferring from a wheelchair to the toilet can be an overwhelming experience for many frail or disabled users. The installation of the Pressalit Care height adjustable Select toilet bracket can make the world of difference, not just from a practical and safety point of view, but importantly in retaining the dignity and independence of the user.

To meet with the requirements of the British Standard, toilets installed in bathrooms used by those with disabilities should be at the same height as a standard wheelchair, to limit the risk of falls.

With the ability to raise or lower the toilet however, ease of transfer can be aided even more with the assistance of gravity.

With the use of a hand-held control, the toilet pan can be adjusted to slightly below the level of the wheelchair, thus helping transfer across. To move back, simply raise the toilet back to a height slightly higher than the wheelchair.

Fourth generation cidermaker, Thatchers Cider, has produced a new Guide to Pairing Cider with Food. Written by national drinks writer, author and TV broadcaster Susy Atkins, the Guide talks through the steps on how to recognise the characteristics in a cider that will make a perfect match with different food styles.

The Thatchers Guide to Pairing Cider with Food not only demonstrates the versatility of cider when it comes to serving it with a meal, but also the characteristics that enhance tastes and flavours in food.

Susy Atkins, who has been writing and broadcasting in the drinks industry for over 25 years, says, “There is nothing more delicious and satisfying than a great marriage between food and drink. And that ‘drink’ most certainly includes cider. Matching the liquid in your glass to the food on your plate is well worth aiming for – it can help bring out the very best in both.
